It is a debilitating psychological problem with far-reaching, serious consequences. It has been called the 'Disease to Please' and curing yourself can be quite difficult. But, there is a fine line between being depended on and being dumped on. My wife may burst into uproarious laughter when she reads this, and I've struggled at times with excessive people pleasing. Oprah: I've read that, like me, you've always struggled with the disease to please. People pleasing is not about nice people attempting to please others. In her best-selling book, psychologist-author Harriet Braiker called it, The Disease to Please.[1] This disease can plague those in Christian ministry. Well, much of my frustration in life has been the result of this disease. Largely because I have a real issue saying “no” to people. The challenge with being the nice guy is that a lot of them run a pattern called the 'disease to please', where the focus is on making everyone happy. We do ourselves a lot of harm trying to fit in with others and become who we think they want us to be, just to be loved. We all want to be wanted and needed, and the 'disease to please' can be tough to discard. Please I took one for the team today. Staying silent when you know your own truth is perhaps one of the most detrimental forms of dishonesty. Jane: I used to walk into a party and think, Oh, my God, will I be interesting enough? Thanks to the late Harriet Braiker, though, I've got some tools to address the issue.
